Jason The CreativeI was curious about how well the Sigma 28-70mm would do for portraits, so I scheduled a shoot with Juliana so I could see the results for myself.
Style and Concept
The mood boards I put together for this shoot were very simple. I wanted to do some all white and high-key styles portraits in the beginning, but I ended up going a different direction with the final edits.
Juliana put together a few simple outfits that could be easy to style and we set a date for the shoot. The next steps were to figure out the camera and lens combo for this shot along.
Sony a7iii Mirrorless Camera
My main camera for this shoot was the Sony a7iii full-frame mirrorless camera. This is my go-to camera for the majority of my portrait shoots when paired with the Sony 55mm f1.8 lens.

It’s a small light weight camera that produces some great quality results. I also have the Sony a7riii that I use for client work. I didn’t feel the need for the higher then usual pixel sizes for this shoot, so I stuck with my main a7iii.

Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 Lens
The Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 lens is a fairly new lens to my collection. I was able to rent the lens before I made a purchase, as I recommend all photographers do before they make a buying decision.
The Sigma 28-70mm is a full-frame lens meant for the Sony e-mount system so it can fit on the full-frame lens or APSC cameras.
Location & Lighting
This shoot was done in my small home studio. It’s a small back room that I use from time to time to do small concept and test shoots.
The room is around 14ft x 20ft long and I normally can shoot most concepts in this small space.
All the walls are white and let light bounce around the room with ease. This makes it really easy to create soft light on my subjects.
I used my a Single Profoto B10 as my key light and a Profoto B2 Strobe for my side lighting. I also had a gobo strobe attachment that I used to create the small lighting effects on the walls behind the model.

Sigma 28-70mm f2.8 Lens – Quick Review
The Sigma 28-70mm created some amazing portrait results. I like the light weight feel of the lens and how it balanced well with the Sony a7iii mirrorless camera.
This camera and lens combo was easy to use for the 1.5hr shoot. Most of my final shots stayed around the 50mm range and the close up quality of these lens was perfect for this test shoot.
I didn’t find any major issues with the final files so I think I’ll be holding on to this lens for a bit longer.
Final Thoughts
I enjoyed the opportunity working with Juliana. I have worked with her a hand full of times and she always comes ready to shoot.
Studio portraits are a great way to practice creative lighting and I highly recommend giving it a chance when you get some extra time.
